U.S. U-17 Women's National Team Defeats Costa Rica to Finish Third at CONCACAF U-17 Women's Championship Share

• Six Different Players Score for USA as Team Ends Tournament With 38-0 Goal Difference

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica (March 20, 2010) – The Under-17 U.S. Women’s National Team ended the 2010 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship with a 6-0 victory against host Costa Rica in a third-place match as six different players scored.
The USA, which failed to qualify for the 2010 U-17 Women’s World Cup after falling in penalty kicks to Canada two days ago in the semifinal, finished the tournament with a 38-0 goal difference over five games while allowing a total of just seven shots on goal.
Costa Rica learned some lessons from the 10-0 thrashing administered by the USA during group play and dropped nine field players behind the ball whenever the Americans had possession.
Still, the USA came out with excellent energy, especially coming off the crushing loss, and managed to score three goals in each half against the low-pressure defense. Kaysie Clark, Kaili Torres and Olivia Brannon scored before the break while Lindsey Horan, Isabel Farrell and Morgan Brian tallied in the second half.
The first goal came in the fifth minute as Horan flicked a ball near the top of the penalty area that fooled the Costa Rican backs and skipped through to Clark, who took one touch and buried her shot from 10 yards out.
Costa Rica dropped extremely deep into its own half during the entire game, mimicking Canada’s tactics from the semifinals, and at times played five defenders across the back line. The USA finally broke through the packed penalty box in the 37th minute after a nice piece of ball-possession got Farrell free to sprint into the right side of the box. Her cross bounced around before it deflected off Horan to Torres, who squeezed her shot into the net from seven yards out.
The final goal of the half also came off some hustle from Farrell as she tracked down a cross in the left corner of the field that had sailed all the way through the goal mouth. She passed it back to Brannon on the left wing and she took a touch towards the penalty box before curving a beautiful shot into the upper left corner from about 25 yards.
The USA completely dominated possession in the game and Costa Rica’s only two chances came when Maria Fernanda Moreira had a good look at goal in the 53rd, but shot wide right from 19 yards, and then when Brian had to clear away a corner kick off a scramble in the penalty box in the 62nd minute.
The first goal of the second half came in the 55th minute off a free kick struck from the penalty arc just a few yards right of center. Brian spun her shot on goal and the Costa Rican goalkeeper knocked it down in front of the goal. Horan was unmarked as she ran onto the rebound and passed the ball into the open net.
The fifth goal came 66 minutes into the game via a nice strike from Farrell, who took a thread pass from Abby Dahlkemper, turned toward goal, beat a couple of players and curved her left-footed shot from 22 yards into the upper right side of the goal.
The last goal came with eight minutes left off a corner kick as Brian jumped high to power a bullet header into the right side of the goal off a well-struck cross by Torres.
The USA’s third goalkeeper Caroline Stanley got the start and her first minutes of the tournament, but touched the ball with her hands just three times in the game. She made an easy save on a shot from distance in the 31st minute, punched away a corner kick in the 62nd and had to grab a bouncing ball in the penalty area in the 83rd after Costa Rica had blocked a U.S. clearance.
For the second time against Costa Rica in this tournament the power went out in the stadium during the match, but this time it was with just one minute remaining. On March 14, the lights went out in the ninth minute and caused a 30-minute delay. This time after a five minute delay, the remaining one minute of regulation and two minutes of stoppage time was played in the falling darkness.
Dahlkemper went the entire 90 minutes and was the only U.S. player to play every minute of the tournament.
The U.S. U-17s will have a quick turnaround to their next event, coming together at the Dallas Cup from April 1-5 to face the Brazilian U-17 Women’s National Team in two matches. The first will be on April 3 at 6:30 p.m. CT at Pizza Hut Park and the teams will also meet on April 5.
